Nearly 6 Million Employees Benefit From TALX W-2 eXpress Services During Current Tax Season; Usage of Electronic Presentment for Original W-2s Soars

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 2003--TALX Corporation (NASDAQ: TALX), a leading business process outsourcer of HR and payroll services, announced today that nearly 6 million W-2s from 96 employers were available through W-2 eXpress(SM) for easy access by employees as well as for reissue and correction purposes. Nearly 2.2 million employees from employers such as Allstate, Social Security Administration, Home Depot, Limited and Borders received their original W-2 forms for the 2002 tax year using W-2 eXpress.

Over 5% of all eligible employees opted to receive their original W-2s electronically rather than through the mail. By choosing this paperless W-2 option, employees can obtain their original W-2 online, complete their taxes and file for a refund all before the paper W-2s are even printed. Paperless W-2s help the employer by eliminating printing and postage costs as well as storage and retrieval costs for returned statements.

Employees can securely access their W-2s using the Internet and by telephone. Two years ago, only 25% of employees used the Internet. This year, about half the employees that used W-2 eXpress retrieved their W-2s online, where they could print and download them to their own computer. The other half chose to use the telephone and have their W-2 faxed or mailed.

"Although this was only the second year that paperless W-2s have been approved by the IRS, we saw employee adoption rates as high as 40% for some clients," said Dave Fowler, director of product management for TALX. "Employees appreciate the immediate access and downloading capabilities of paperless W-2s."

W-2 eXpress automates the printing and distribution of original W-2s as well as the reissue and correction processes. In addition, through alliances with Intuit Inc. and H&R Block Inc., TALX allows its clients' employees to import W-2s directly into tax preparation software. This online process eliminates the need for employees to manually prepare tax forms or re-enter data, significantly reducing errors and speeding up the tax filing process. Plus, this year, employees received discounts on tax products and services, as well as free access to the TurboTax(R) Employee Tax Resource Center. Some clients even had their names added to the TurboTax for the Web(SM) service to make it even easier for their employees to import their W-2 information.

"With potential savings of about $0.50 per paperless W-2, clients with high adoption rates quickly realize the benefits of W-2 eXpress," continued Fowler. "Our clients are finding that in addition to saving money and improving services, W-2 eXpress can help change corporate cultures from paper-based to paperless. Employee acceptance of paperless W-2s opens the door for clients to adopt other paperless payroll service from TALX such as ePayroll Services and FasTime(R) automated timesheets."
